Organic Fertiliser
Why use organic fertiliser as opposed to artificial fertiliser?
To answer the question properly we must first look at how plants take up nutrients. Plants rely on water to transport the nutrients through the cell membrane by osmosis. Artificial chemical fertilisers are highly water-soluble and while this allows for easy uptake the plant is less able to shop for nutrients at its leisure and is flooded with high concentrations which are then leached out of the root zone by our heavy rains, as evident of late.
While slow release artificial fertilisers do combat this, a large amount of the nutrients still escape the root zone, down into the water table. Organic fertilisers however contain the nutrients in a format that cannot be copied (Humus) and allows the plant to feed off the complex humic acids that are formed by the natural break down process.
Organic fertilisers contribute to the overall health of the soil by feeding the natural cycles and organisms that occur in the soil. Healthy soil means healthy plants and healthy plants are far less susceptible to disease and insect attack.
While artificial fertiliser serve their purpose by restoring certain deficiencies in agriculture in your garden, you can achieve better results by aiming for healthy soil through enriched composts and organic fertilisers.
The key to all fertilisers is balance of all micro and macronutrients as high levels of any one can inhibit the uptake of other essential elements.
